Order in the Library is a great web game that will help students learn how to put books in order on a bookshelf. This game also allows for the student to print a certificate when they finish a section.

Word Clouds

This week with my fifth grade students I had the students pick their favorite book or a book recently read. They wrote the title of the book using a word processing program and a list of describing words about the book. We talked about if you write the word more than one time it will make it bigger not add the word a bunch of times on the word cloud. I suggested that they do this with their book title. We also talked about the tilde (~) and if you put this between words it will keep them together. They then pasted the words into a word cloud program. We used Wordle and ABC Ya! Word Clouds. This was a great project that the students seemed to really enjoy. We will be posting these in our library.

Library Basketball

I found a library activity book called Fun-Brarian by Kathleen Fox and modified her library basketball to fit my class situation. I went out and bought a Nerf basketball hoop and basketball. I then created a stack of cards with library questions.

To play the game I divide the class into four groups. I explain that the groups have to work together to answer the questions. I ask a question of the of the first group. If they get it correct they get a point and then each person in that group gets one shot at the basketball hoop. If they make a basket they get another point for their group. If they don't get the question correct I let the next group try to answer the question.
